Let’s Celebrate the Fourth
Kathy Riggs July 5th, 2009
The seller has listed his house and the buyers are coming,…but we are right in the middle of summer vacation season, so let’s take a little break and focus on a very special holiday.
Saturday, was the Fourth of July and when it occurs on a weekend, people may be puzzled to know which is actually “the week of the Fourth” – the week before or the week after. I’m choosing the week after, so I’m devoting this post to saluting America.
Most of you did that this weekend with trips to the beach, cookouts, parades and fireworks. Whatever your celebration was, I hope it was happy and I hope you took a moment to focus on this great nation and the vision our founders had the summer of 1776 when they penned the Declaration of Independence. Parades, cookouts, even a Fourth of July Sale are traditions that are truly American. Weekend newspaper magazines asked the question, “What makes America Great?” Answers varied, but there was one recurring theme: In America, if you work hard, you can achieve your dreams. No one said achieving a dream would be easy without effort. Perhaps that was what authors of the Declaration of Indepence were thinking when they included among the “unalienable rights” endowed to a people by their Creator “the pursuit of happiness.” And this what makes America great. In this country we can pursue our dreams and our success. The authors of the Declaration of Independence did not say America would owe or grant us happiness or success, it only states that we have have the unalienable right to pursue our happiness. So, head out to the Fourth of July sales, you’ll be supporting free enterprise. Whatever it may be, work hard to achieve your piece of the Amerian dream. And during the pursuit, remember how many citizens of the world don’t have that right.

My real estate agent was always smiling. I didn’t think anyone could have that many teeth without being a barracuda.
