Fundraiser for A Great Citizen
Kathy Riggs July 26th, 2009
In honor of my birthday…I’m taking a week off from the blog…also the post below is worth a rerun.
This week we will take a break from the contract to closing as the professionals are making the necessary repairs to make the house ready for a new owner.
If you have been traveling along with us, we started the trip to the closing table via the seller’s shoes a few weeks ago, we’ll resume next week after I tell you about something that is important to me and to a lot of people in Kinston N.C. (That’s where I sell houses, remember).
On Friday, August 14 a fundraiser is being held to raise money to erect a memorial in honor of the late Ted Sampley. The event spearheaded by John Nix of Matrix East, a surveying firm in Kinston, is “Wings Over the Neuse” and will take place from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. August 14 at the corner of Herritage and Gordon streets. Tickets are five dollars and each ticket holder will receive a plate of chicken wings, celery and carrots with the complementary dips. Proceeds will be used to erect a memorial near the CCS Neuse II at the corner of Herritage and Gordon streets. The CSS Neuse II – a replica of the original Civil War gunboat, the CSS Neuse – was Sampley’s vision. Construction began several years ago and the replica is nearing completion. Tragically, Ted passed away May 12, 2009 and supporters of the project want a tangible way to honor Ted and his vision.
Ted’s contributions to downtown Kinston were not limited to the boat project. Buildings on Queen and Herritage streets fell to disarray as our town followed in the demise of Main Street USA. Ted began to buy run-down properties and he opened businesses in two of the ones on Herritage Street. Slowly but surely the local streetscape began to change and now Herritage Street is a picturesque area once again drawing people downtown. Ted was never afraid of being first to take on a challenge be it city hall or Washington, D.C. He was known nationally for his work with veterans organizations, particularly Vietnam Veterans. Our town is lucky Ted decided to call Kinston home. If any citizen deserves to be honored, Ted Sampley does. Contributions may be mailed to 710 Rountree Street, Kinston NC. 28501. Checks should be made to the CSS Neuse II Foundation.
